Horse Owner's Course

Just to let you know that I am starting up another 6 week session of my New Horse Owner's Course. It is great for new owners, horse owners bringing their horses home from boarding, refresher for folks getting back into horses and parents of a horse crazy child. It is held in 6 sessions on Saturdays from 2pm-4:30pm. In the past the classes were held on thursday evenings and I am trying saturday afternoons to make it more accessible for working folks. This is my 8th year of offering this class. Please tell anyone you think may be interested and could benefit from this course.

Cherry Ledge Farm New Horse Owner's Course to be held on February 25, March 4, 18, 25 and April 1, and 8th. The hours are Saturdays from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The course will cover:
Horse Care: feeding, routine care, selection of feeds, emergency care until the vet can arrive, health care overview (colic, founder, EPM, EPSM, cushings, insulin resistance and more), spring shots, and worming

Stable Management: selection of barn equipment, stable design and layout, ideas for planning the layout on property, stable cleaning, upkeep, types of bedding, storage of hay and feed Tack and Equipment: selection, care, parts, measuring, use of training aids, fitting saddles and bridles, learning about the styles of riding and driving, bits and their uses and much more

Horse Handling: safely catching and haltering, leading, learn to read a horse's emotions and thought processes, safety rules to live by, round pen basics, how to handle the horse for the vet and farrier.

Question and Answer time at each session and remember there are no stupid questions!

The cost for the course is $200.00 and it includes handouts of all subjects covered in a folder for you to use as a future reference. Please bring a notebook and pen for taking notes during the classes. Dress for the weather, we will be in the barn. If it is extremely cold outside, the barn averages 40-50 degrees inside.

Training Videos

In November of 2004, a local cable access show was filmed at Cherry Ledge Farm about Mint Black Jack, Lippitt Morgans and various farm activities. This filming brought about an overwhelming request to have training videos produced for the general horse public.

This year we hope to start making a series of training and horse handling videos. Watch this website for production dates and availability.

Printed training books in spiral bound format are also in the planning stages.

Cherry Ledge Farm Grain Store

Since the opening on May 7, 2005, the store has grown with inventory and a faithful following has developed for the products carried. Cherry Ledge Farm Grain Store carries Central Connecticut Co-operative horse feed, McCauley horse feed and ADM feed products. We also carry Dr. Benson's products. Other products will be added to fulfill customer demand. We also carry ADM dog and cat foods and all other livestock type feeds can be special ordered. 3.2 cubic feet plastic bags of pine shavings are available.
